Abstract

Architects often employ design methods to help them find more creative forms. These methods make it possible to break free of the traditional canon of forms and established paradigms. At the same time, there must be enough leeway for a functional, systematic design conception to take shape. This volume focuses in depth on the design methods that have decisively shaped current architectural practice.Themes are - Diagrammatic methods (using drawings and schematic representations), -Mimetic methods (imitative), - Parametric methods (using a characteristic quantity), - Automated and digital design methods of the contemporary avant-garde, e.g. scaling, datascapes, folding, and morphing. Scaling, Datascapes, Folding, Morphing

Abstract

Universele ontwerpprincipes is the first interdisciplinary, comprehensive reference work for designers, technicians, architects and students. This standard work for designers from all disciplines combines on each double page, the description of an established design principle with illustrated examples from practice. From the '80/20 rule' to 'chunking', from the 'Baby face-factor' to 'Ockham's razorblade' from the 'waist-hip relation' to 'cognitive dissonance'. You'll learn everything there is to know about hundreds of frequently used design principles that promote easy use, influence perception, boost appeal and improve learning processes.

Through an investigation that spans architecture art, and literature, this study attempts to limn horror through its shifting forms and meanings--and to identify a creeping unease that lingers at the very center of the modern project.

Abstract

In 1987, Peter G. Rowe published his pioneering book Design Thinking. In it, he interrogated conceptual approaches to design in terms of both process and form. Thirty years later, in a lecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Rowe offered a reappraisal of his earlier work, describing ways in which the capacities of the digital age have changed the way we perceive and understand creative problem-solving in architectural design. In this new account of 'design thinking' based on that memorable talk, Rowe charges that ideas about the 'precision' and 'incompleteness' of information have become exaggerated and made more manifest. He dives into the crucial role of schema theory and the heuristics that flow from it, but concedes that the 'ineffable characteristics of design problems and of design thinking also appear to have remained. Abstract

At first glance a children's book, Jeane D'aam's illustrated story is actually an introduction to modern Dutch architecture. Everything starts with a square. A square can be rotated, doubled, divided in two, and then again in four. Its corners can then be cut, stretched, and more. One page at a time, the shape of a house begins to appear. The Dutch, however, love houses with low roofs in the countryside, so these shapes change again to become hexagonal. In cities, on the other hand, a lot of rectangular houses are needed, perhaps joined together by a bridge. Finally, by adding doors, windows, and a touch of colour, this series of geometric shapes turns into perfect Dutch houses.

Abstract

This inspiring book chronicles the most influential ideas that have shaped architecture. Entertainingly written by an expert on architecture, it provides a concise history of the subject, and offers a fascinating resource to dip into for the general reader. Starting with the basic building 'components' of door, window, column and beam and the Classical orders, it then goes on to explore historical movements such as the Picturesque and Beaux-Arts, innovative materials such as steel and reinforced concrete, technical innovations, such as the lift and electric lighting, through to modern movements such as Universal Design and Deconstruction. Arranged in a broadly chronological order, the ideas are presented through fascinating text and arresting visuals, 100 Ideas that Changed Architecture explores when each idea first evolved and the subsequent impact it has had up to the present day.
